Are You Playing Wordle?

2/14/2025

Unless you’re totally new to computers and the internet, you’ve probably heard of Wordle. You may have played it. Even today. But did you know how popular it is? And why? And more?

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a word puzzle game that was launched by software engineer Josh Wardle in October 2021. Players are given six chances to guess a five-letter word. Following each guess, the game color-coded hints appear: gray means the letter appears nowhere in the word, yellow indicates a letter that is in the word but in a different position, and green means the letter is correct and in the right position.

How Popular is Wordle?

In its first month after release, the game garnered just ninety players, but within just a couple months, its popularity exploded. In January 2022, the game had 300,000 daily players—and millions of weekend players. Soon after, The New York Times bought the game for an undisclosed fee. Today it’s the most popular game on The New York Times site, attracting an estimated 2 million daily players.

What Makes Wordle So Popular?

Wordle’s popularity is likely due to several factors. It’s free, and available as an app that can also be easily accessed on the Wordle website. Its simplicity is also an advantage; it requires only a few minutes of play each day, while giving the player a sense of achievement and satisfaction (Wardle has said that he experimented with different word lengths, and found the six-letter puzzle to be the most rewarding for the player). With its integration into social media platforms, players can share their results with friends online.

Also, since there’s only a single puzzle offered each day, players can fit the day’s puzzle into even the busiest schedule, finishing in minutes rather than hours, making it an ideal break in a busy day.

Is Wordle Stressful or Relaxing?

For some players, Wordle provides a relaxing—even meditative—daily ritual, offering just the right level of difficulty to stimulate the mind without overwhelming it. It’s a small puzzle that can be tackled quickly, providing a sense of closure at the end of each day.

Some, however, may find Wordle to be stressful, especially when they encounter a difficult or even unknown (to them) word. But the brevity of the game and the fact that a new word appears every day can provide motivation to keep trying. It all depends on the player’s mindset.

Did You Know There Is a TruPlay Word Game?

Whether you play Wordle or not, if you enjoy word games, the TruPlay Games app offers a fun, relaxing word game. Lumi’s Words of Light, a simple but engaging word game for children and adults, opens up a world of God’s promises and blessings to the player. As the player unscrambles short words, each level sheds new light on God’s everlasting and unconditional love as revealed in God’s Word, the Bible.

Lumi’s Words of Light is just one of many games in the TruPlay app’s selection of games, videos, and comics. And there’s no safer gaming environment for players of all ages; because TruPlay employs a subscription-based model, children and adults can play, read, and have fun in an environment with no in-app purchases, no ads, and no in-app texting or chats, making it a safe and worry-free gaming environment.

TruPlay's website (TruPlayGames.com) clearly details the app's offerings, and free downloads and trials that are available in both the Apple App Store and GooglePlay. Explore the following links to unlock a fun and safe entertainment experience for your kids:
